Sudan’s doctors’ union has provided a grim update on the civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), stating that the death toll has reached 822, with 3,215 others wounded.
Despite the truce talks held in Jeddah and the recent signing of a “declaration of principles” aimed at protecting civilians and facilitating humanitarian aid, the confrontations that began on 15 April have only intensified.
The doctor’s union in a Facebook post on Tuesday, disclosed that the city of El-Geneina in West Darfur state has witnessed the most severe violence since the conflict started, with a staggering 280 deaths and over 160 injuries reported in the past two days alone.
Civilians have tragically lost their lives not only in El-Geneina but also in other affected areas such as the capital city of Khartoum, the neighbouring cities of Bahri and Omdurman, as well as El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State.
The conflict, now entering its second month, has caused widespread displacement, with nearly a million people forced to flee their homes, according to the United Nations.
The situation remains critical, and efforts to find a lasting solution and protect vulnerable civilians continue amidst the escalating violence.
