Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has abruptly ended his official visit to South Africa after a devastating Russian missile and drone attack struck Kyiv overnight, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 70 others.

According to Ukrainian military sources, Russia launched over 200 missiles and drones in the large-scale assault, with about half intercepted by air defense systems.

Despite these efforts, 13 locations across Kyiv, including residential neighborhoods, were severely damaged.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said emergency crews were still searching the rubble, with calls from trapped victims heard beneath the debris. Two children remain missing.

Zelensky, who had just finished bilateral talks with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, announced his early departure via social media, stating, “Due to this Russian attack, I’ve decided to shorten my visit. Our Foreign Minister will remain to continue scheduled meetings.”

He thanked South Africa for its hospitality and highlighted discussions with Ramaphosa about increasing international pressure on Russia and leveraging South Africa’s current G20 presidency to promote peace.

The attack came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Zelensky for rejecting Russia’s claim over Crimea.

Trump accused him of prolonging the war and again called for an immediate ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to respond to Ukraine’s latest appeal to stop targeting civilians. Recent Russian attacks also hit Kharkiv and Sumy, causing more casualties, including children.

In a separate claim, Russia said it had shot down 87 Ukrainian drones, including 45 over the occupied Crimean Peninsula.
