The World Athletics Council has postponed the 2023 World Athletics Relays scheduled for Guangzhou China between May 13 and 14.
The organisers have now announced May 2025 with no exact date yet to be confirmed as new period for the event.
This decision was taken with the agreement of both the Guangzhou Local Organising Committee (LOC) and the Chinese Athletics Association (CAA), due to the ongoing pandemic conditions.
“It is regrettable when we have to postpone an event. However, World Athletics and the local organising committee are both committed to the responsible planning and delivery of the World Athletics Relays, which includes ensuring that athletes from all international federations can participate in and enjoy an experience in a safe and healthy environment.
“I want to thank our colleagues at the Chinese Athletics Association and the LOC for their efforts and cooperation in resolving this situation and look forward to 2025 when our hosts can stage a spectacular World Athletics Relays”, the president of the World Athletics Sebastian Coe said via the official website.
The World Athletics Relays was expected to serve as a qualifying event for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
Following the postponement, World Athletics has decided to revise the qualification pathway.
So, the new arrangement according to the body is that the top eight teams from the World Athletics Championships in Oregon this summer will earn automatic tickets to the 2023 edition in the Hungaria.
