Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed, recently met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Nigeria, Miriam Palmero in a move to collaborate on mutual bilateral relations.
According to a statement issued by Kimiebi Ebienfa, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to review the state of Nigeria Cuba bilateral relations, exchange views on pressing international issues, and reaffirm their shared commitment to peace, multilateralism, and respect for international law.
During the meeting, Ambassador Palmero expressed appreciation to the Government of Nigeria for its consistent support and solidarity with Cuba. She noted that Nigeria’s longstanding backing reflects the cordial and principled relationship between the two countries, particularly within multilateral platforms and international organisations.
The Cuban Ambassador also briefed the Permanent Secretary on recent developments in Latin America and their broader regional implications. She called for greater global understanding and cooperation, while stressing Cuba’s commitment to peaceful engagement, social development, free education, universal healthcare, and gender inclusion. She reaffirmed her country’s openness to dialogue anchored on mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs.
In addition, Amb Palmero informed Ambassador Ahmed of plans for a proposed high-level visit to Nigeria by the Vice President of Cuba, Salvador Valdés Mesa, following the African Union Summit. She explained that the visit would build on earlier high-level engagements and further strengthen political, economic, and diplomatic cooperation between both nations.
In his response, the Permanent Secretary applauded the Cuban Ambassador and reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to deepen its longstanding relationship with Cuba. He emphasised Nigeria’s firm commitment to peace, security, and the peaceful resolution of disputes in line with international law, assuring the Cuban side of Nigeria’s continued solidarity and constructive engagement within multilateral frameworks.
Both parties concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening Nigeria–Cuba relations and sustaining collaboration on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
