The Nigerian Government has expressed sorrow over the death of former President of Botswana, Festus Gontebanye Mogae, who passed away at the age of 86.
This was contained in a statement issued by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
According to the statement, Nigeria received with profound sadness the news of the passing of the distinguished African statesman, economist and former leader whose administration from 1998 to 2008 was widely praised for strengthening democratic governance, economic stability and social development in Botswana.
The Federal Government described Mogae as a principled and humble leader whose dedication to public service earned him admiration across Africa and the international community.
Nigeria also commended the late former president for his bold leadership in tackling the HIV/AIDS crisis during a critical period in Botswana’s history, noting that his administration’s response reflected visionary leadership and a commitment to human dignity and public welfare.
The statement further acknowledged Mogae’s contributions to peacebuilding and regional stability efforts across Africa after leaving office, particularly his involvement in supporting peace initiatives on the continent.
The Nigerian government stressed that both Nigeria and Botswana share cordial bilateral relations built on African solidarity, democratic ideals, mutual respect and shared aspirations for peace and sustainable development.
While sympathising with the government and people of Botswana during the period of mourning, Nigeria prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and the entire nation.
