Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, held a closed-door meeting with his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, over developments in Mali’s political crisis.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan is Special Envoy and ECOWAS mediator to the West African country.
Bashir Ahmad, aide to the president on new media, shared photos of Buhari and Jonathan meeting at the state house on his Twitter page.
He said the former leader’s visit was to brief the president on the fresh political crisis in Mali.
“President @MBuhari receives former President @GEJonathan today. The former leader was at the State House, Abuja to brief the President over the new political crisis in Mali. An ECOWAS delegation led by GEJ was in Bamako, the capital of Mali on Tuesday, for mediation,” he wrote.
According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, President Buhari called on the actors in the political crisis in Mali to come together for the peace and unity of the country.
The President was quoted as saying “a situation where most parts of the country are in the hands of insurgents calls for a consensus and restoration of peace, not a further escalation of the crisis.”
