British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has married his fiancee Carrie Symonds in a secretly-planned wedding.
Johnson, 56, and Symonds, 33, said “I do” at London’s main Roman Catholic church in central London on Saturday afternoon in front of a small group of family and friends.
He is only the second British prime minister to marry while in power, and the first in nearly two centuries. The last was Robert Jenkinson in 1822.
“The Prime Minister and Ms Symonds were married yesterday afternoon in a small ceremony at Westminster Cathedral,” a Downing Street spokesman said.
“The couple will celebrate their wedding with family and friends next summer.”
Although Mr Johnson, 56, has been married twice before, the Roman Catholic Church can allow divorcees to remarry if the previous marriages were outside the Roman Catholic Church.
Long walk to the aisle
Although it is unclear about when the lovebirds met and began dating, they spent Valentine’s Day together in February 2018 and went into history books as the first non-married couple to live together at Downing Street.
About Johnson’s previous marriages
Johnson was first married to
Allegra Mostyn. The now-estranged couples met and began dating while studying at Oxford University. It wasn’t long before they tied the knot in 1987 and remained couples for the next 5 years. 1993 was the year which they agreed to an amicable divorce and have remained friends ever since.
Twelve days after getting divorced from Allegra, Johnson got married to his childhood friend and barrister Marina Wheeler. The ex-couples went on to have two daughters, Lara and Cassia, as well as two sons, Milo and Theodore before separating after 25 years of marriage.
