Nigerian striker, Odion Ighalo could be making a surprise return to the national team ahead of the of the forthcoming African Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon in 2022 and next month’s World Cup qualifiers.
Recall that the former Manchester United striker had announced his retirement from international duties after his 2019 AFCON feat in Egypt, where he won the Golden Boot.
Now plying his trade at Al-Shabab, the 32-year-old’s red-hot form has hugged the headlines in recent weeks, with Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr looking to persuade him out of retirement.
In the ongoing Saudi Pro-League campaign, Ighalo has claimed nine goals in the 10 games, with the latest strike coming on Thursday against Al Tai in a 3-0 win.
Speaking on his possible return to the national team, Ighalo said;
“They have been in contact with me about the possibility of coming back, Amaju and Coach.
“I don’t know. I have not said yes or no. I haven’t made any decision concerning the national team.”
Prior to his retirement, Ighalo made 35 appearances for the West African nation from 2015 to 2019, scoring 16 goals in the process.
In the 2022 AFCON, Nigeria are in Group D alongside Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau, while they are atop their World Cup qualifying group with two matches left.
