Ferran Torres struck a dramatic extra-time winner as Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 on Sunday to claim their second FIFA World Cup title, denying Lionel Messi the perfect ending to one of football’s greatest careers.

The Barcelona forward smashed home the decisive goal in the 106th minute after Nico Williams nodded Pedro Porro’s cross into his path, capping a dominant Spanish display at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Spain controlled much of the contest and relentlessly pressed Argentina, who remarkably failed to register a single shot on target throughout 120 minutes of football.

The victory sealed Spain’s second World Cup triumph, adding to the title they won in South Africa in 2010.

A crowd of 80,663, including United States President Donald Trump, packed the stadium hoping to witness Messi lift the World Cup for a second time in what is widely expected to be the 39-year-old’s final appearance at the tournament.

Instead, the Argentine captain endured a frustrating evening as Spain dictated possession and tempo, leaving the veteran playmaker largely anonymous.

Argentina’s frustrations increasingly spilled over into rash challenges and cynical fouls. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez was eventually sent off deep into stoppage time after a reckless tackle on Spanish defender Pau Cubarsi.

Despite Spain’s superiority, Argentina appeared destined to force the final into a penalty shootout as goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez repeatedly frustrated the Spanish attack.

Spain thought they had finally broken the deadlock in extra time when Nico Williams found the net, only for Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic to rule out the effort for a marginal foul on Nicolas Otamendi.

The breakthrough eventually arrived six minutes later. Porro floated a cross to the far post where Williams headed the ball across goal for Torres, who unleashed a thunderous finish beyond Martinez to spark wild celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters.

The final had been fiercely contested from the opening exchanges.

Argentina signalled their aggressive approach in the 15th minute when Alexis Mac Allister caught Dani Olmo with a studs-up challenge but escaped a booking after the referee awarded only a foul.

Spain responded moments later when Alex Baena caught Messi with an elbow to the back, another incident that went unpunished.

Argentina continued to push the limits with several robust tackles, with Nicolas Tagliafico fortunate not to receive a caution after bringing down teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

Eventually, Vincic reached into his pocket to book Lisandro Martinez for a cynical foul on Mikel Oyarzabal. Martinez was later forced off through injury and replaced by veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi.

Spain continued to dominate possession before the interval, but Oyarzabal failed to seriously trouble Martinez with his low effort shortly before half-time.

An extended 27-minute halftime show featuring global music stars including Madonna, Shakira and Justin Bieber did little to disrupt Spain’s rhythm after the restart.

Coach Luis de la Fuente introduced Pedri and Torres in search of the breakthrough, and Spain’s pressure intensified.

Torres went close with a downward header brilliantly saved by Martinez, while Pedri and Cubarsi both tested the Argentine goalkeeper from distance.

The introductions of Nico Williams and Mikel Merino added fresh energy to Spain’s attack as Argentina retreated deeper into their own half.

Fernandez was first cautioned for dissent before eventually seeing red in stoppage time following his dangerous challenge on Cubarsi.

Martinez continued his outstanding performance by producing a superb save to keep out Yamal’s curling free-kick before making another excellent stop to deny Williams’ glancing header early in extra time.

However, even the Argentine goalkeeper could not prevent Torres’ decisive strike.

Argentina mounted one final attack in the closing moments, but Spain stood firm to secure a memorable victory and reclaim football’s biggest prize, while bringing an emotional end to Messi’s World Cup journey.
