SpaceX, Elon Musk’s satellite company, has reduced the cost of the hardware and monthly subscription of its Starlink internet service in Nigeria.
The previous cost of $600 (N438,000) for hardware and $43 (N31,000) per month has been lowered to N274,098 and N19,260 respectively.
The price decrease, as seen on the company’s website, may have been influenced by feedback from the Nigerian market, which considered the previous pricing too high.
The move could also be an attempt to compete in the Nigerian market, where several telecom companies already operate.
According to the company’s website, Nigerians can expect download speeds of 50-200 Mbps.
An early user of the service in Nigeria reported that he initially saw speeds of 20 Mbps, which increased to 240 Mbps later.
It would be recalled that Nigeria’s Minister of Communications Ali Pantami stated that the nation has achieved 100% broadband coverage with the operation of Starlink, exceeding the target set in the National Broadband Plan (NBP 2020-2025) to achieve 90% coverage by 2025.
