Microsoft Nigeria has announced a $1 million initiative to equip one million Nigerians with artificial intelligence (AI) skills over the next two years.
The announcement was made by Ola Williams, Country Manager for Microsoft Nigeria and Ghana, during the Microsoft AI Tour in Lagos. She emphasised that the initiative is designed to empower Nigerians with AI expertise to develop innovative solutions, launch businesses, and compete globally.
Describing the programme as a historic milestone, Williams highlighted Microsoft’s commitment to fostering AI-driven growth in Nigeria. She noted that the investment aligns with the country’s broader digital transformation efforts and reflects Microsoft’s confidence in Nigeria’s potential as a leading tech hub in Africa.
The AI skilling programme will cater to leaders, developers, young professionals, and government officials, ensuring widespread access to training resources. Williams reiterated Microsoft’s dedication to collaborating with stakeholders to enhance digital learning opportunities across the country.
Lillian Barnard, President of Microsoft Africa, also expressed excitement about expanding AI adoption in Nigeria. She emphasised that Africa particularly key markets such as Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, and Kenya must actively participate in the Fifth Industrial Revolution, driven by AI innovation.
Microsoft has been operational in Africa for over three decades, but recent strategic initiatives have reinforced its commitment to aligning Africa’s digital growth with its global mission. The AI training programme follows a similar initiative launched in South Africa and strengthens Microsoft’s long-term investment in developing African tech talent.
