The president emphasized that Jonathan’s receipt of the Sunhak Peace Award serves as a testament to his tireless contributions to peacebuilding and the promotion of democracy, not just in Africa, but globally.

Tinubu also highlighted Jonathan’s pivotal role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, recalling his historic decision in 2015 to graciously accept the election results and peacefully transfer power to an opposition party, which significantly enhanced the nation’s democratic standing.

The president celebrated Jonathan’s remarkable achievement and expressed gratitude to the Sunhak Peace Prize Committee for recognizing those dedicated to making a positive global impact.

“The President states that Dr Jonathan’s winning the Sunhak Peace Award affirms his bold efforts in peacebuilding and promoting democracy in Africa and beyond.

“The President recalls the former President’s historic acceptance of the results of the 2015 presidential election and his peaceful handover of power to an opposition party, which bolstered the nation’s democratic profile.

“President Tinubu celebrates this landmark achievement with former President Jonathan and thanks the Sunhak Peace Prize Committee for recognising the efforts of those working hard to improve the world,” part of the statement read.

About The Sunhak Peace Price

The Sunhak Peace Prize was established in 2015 by the Sunhak Peace Foundation to recognize individuals or organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to world peace.

The award seeks to honor those who have worked tirelessly to promote peace, democracy, human rights, and the well-being of humanity.

It was named after Sun Myung Moon, the founder of the Unification Church, whose legacy of promoting global peace through interfaith dialogue and reconciliation inspired the foundation of the prize.

Winners are selected by the Sunhak Peace Prize Selection Committee, chaired by the former President of the European Commission and the first chair of the GAVI Board, José Manuel Barroso.

Past recipients of the prestigious award include a diverse group of global figures who have made significant strides in peacebuilding.

Notable laureates include former Senegalese President Macky Sall; former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon; President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Akinwumi Adesina; Anote Tong, former President of Kiribati; and global Vaccine Alliance, Gavi.

These distinguished individuals, like Jonathan, have been celebrated for their transformative impact on promoting peace and fostering global harmony.
