A football fan, Bashir Bala, will spend three months in prison for assaulting Nigerian player Temitope Vincent.
The assault occurred during a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash between Nasarawa United and Plateau United last weekend, which ended 3-2 in favour of the home team.
Bala was arraigned by the Nigerian Police on a three-count charge bordering on assault, use of criminal force, and public disturbance.
His committal includes an option of a fine.
Upon arraignment, he pleaded guilty to the charges before a Chief Magistrate Court in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
However, contrary to earlier reports suggesting that Temitope was stabbed, his club has confirmed that the player only sustained minor injuries.
Temitope, who has since resumed training with his teammates at Plateau United, debunked the stabbing rumours, saying he is focused on helping his team in upcoming matches.
