Chelsea Return To Winning Ways As Arsenal, Man Utd Tastes Painful Defeats

Chelsea ended an awful week in emphatic fashion with a 6-0 win over Southampton at the Saint Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.

Heading into Saturday, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side looked like the worst kind of opposition for Thomas Tuchel.

Marcos Alonso’s opener inside ten minutes came after Timo Werner had hit the woodwork twice and, from there, the floodgates opened.

Mason Mount, not a popular figure amongst the Southampton support, scored a brilliant second with a controlled strike from just outside the box before Werner showed great composure on the counter to round the otherwise excellent Fraser Forster, which says so much about a team who lost by such a big margin.

Kai Havertz tapped in after Werner had struck the post again to make it four before the interval.

Less than five minutes into the second-half, the German striker took his tally against Southampton up to five in total by scoring a second before Mount grabbed his brace.

In the other fixture played simultaneously, Brighton saw off a late Arsenal rally to secure the three points as they run out 2-1 victors away at the Emirates.

The visitors took the lead on 28 minutes, when Mwepu laid the ball off to Trossard before the forward placed the ball into the top corner.

The hosts thought they were level just before the break, as Martinelli headed home from a corner. However, replays showed that the Brazilian was offside as Gabriel nodded the ball back to him and the goal was disallowed after a lengthy VAR check.

The Seagulls doubled their lead on 66 minutes, when Mwepu turned from provider to scorer as he fired home a brilliant first-time effort after Caicedo found him on the edge of the box.

The hosts got back into it late on, as they hit the post twice in a couple of seconds before an Odegaard shot from distance deflected off Welbeck and over Sanchez into the back of the net.

In an earlier fixture, Everton secured a much-needed three points as the Merseyside club took a major step towards securing their Premier League status with a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Goodison Park.

Victory at Goodison Park, courtesy of Anthony Gordon’s deflected first-half effort — lifts Frank Lampard’s team four points clear of the bottom three having played a game more than 18th-placed Burnley.

United top-scorer Cristiano Ronaldo returned after missing last week’s 1-1 draw with Leicester along with out-of-form fellow forward Marcus Rashford, who was making his 200th Premier League appearance.

The visitors were the first side to threaten against a team desperately short of confidence following a string of disappointing results, including a 3-2 loss to Burnley in midweek.
The home side scored against the run of play in the 27th minute.

United lost the ball in midfield and Richarlison, initially forced wide on the left, cut the ball back towards the box, where it fell for Gordon.

The forward struck his shot well but a deflection off England defender Harry Maguire, who has struggled for form this season, left David de Gea stranded.
