The Government of Imo State in Nigeria has entered into an agreement with the Egyptian power company Madkour Group to address the state’s ongoing power supply issues.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed at the Government House in Owerri on Saturday, marking the culmination of months of partnership discussions and facility tours between Madkour Group and the Orashi Electricity Company of Imo State.

Dr. Mostafa Madkour, President of Madkour Group signed the MOU on behalf of the Egyptian firm, while Engr. Valentine Obumeyan, Acting General Manager of Orashi Electricity Company represented the Imo State government. Both parties are committed to significantly improving the power supply in Imo State by January next year.

At the signing ceremony, attended by top government officials and key Madkour Group management, Governor Hope Uzodimma highlighted his administration’s commitment to the development of Imo State.

He noted that a new law on power generation had been enacted, leading to the creation of Orashi Electricity Company Limited. The Federal Government has supported the state in establishing the company and in securing technical and financial partners.

Governor Uzodimma therefore emphasized the importance of partnerships in the power sector, noting that the significant investment required for power generation, distribution, and transmission necessitates collaboration beyond the state’s resources.
