By Emmanuel Nduka

Tanzania’s Vice President, Emmanuel John Nchimbi, has resigned from office and announced his retirement from public service and active politics, in a surprise development that brings his tenure under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to an abrupt end.

Nchimbi’s resignation, announced on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, will take effect on September 4. He formally communicated his decision to President Hassan in a letter, according to a public notice issued by the Office of the Vice President in Dodoma.

The Vice President said his decision was guided by provisions of Tanzania’s Constitution, specifically Articles 50(2)(c) and 149(2), which provide for the appointment of a new vice president when the office becomes vacant.

Nchimbi also indicated that his decision followed a commitment he had previously made to President Hassan. He said he had come to the conclusion that the president wanted a change in the country’s second-highest political office and chose to honour his earlier promise rather than remain in the position.

His departure comes less than a year after he assumed the vice presidency. Nchimbi became President Hassan’s running mate ahead of Tanzania’s 2025 general election and took office as Vice President on November 3, 2025, succeeding the late Philip Mpango.

The resignation also comes against the backdrop of growing public discussion over Tanzania’s political and constitutional direction. In July, Nchimbi made remarks urging Tanzanians and rights groups to push for a new constitution, comments that generated considerable debate within the country.

His decision makes Nchimbi the first Tanzanian vice president to voluntarily relinquish the office while still serving, according to reports.

Nchimbi, a senior member of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has held several senior government and diplomatic positions. Before becoming vice president, he served as Minister of Home Affairs and held other ministerial and diplomatic assignments, including ambassadorial postings in Brazil and Egypt.

With his resignation set to take effect on September 4, attention will now turn to President Hassan’s choice of a successor and what the unexpected departure could mean for the leadership and political dynamics of Tanzania.
