Inter Milan’s title winning players have been told to surrender their two months wages barely a week after they won the Serie A.
Antonio Conte’s men ended Juventus’ dominant run of nine straight titles to win the Scudetto for the first time since 2010.
However, it’s the club’s dire financial situation that has prompted Inter president Steven Zhang to ask the squad if they can freeze their wages.
The San Siro giants ran short on finances due to the unpredictable coronavirus pandemic, and Zhang is proposing a two-month wage freeze to reduce costs by 20 percent.
However, Inter’s CEO Beppe Marotta confirmed the club will honour the performance bonuses agreed for winning the Serie A title.
He said: “I can confirm the Scudetto bonuses will be paid, as they were earned and the club recognises that. For the rest, it’s about taking a snapshot of where football is right now.
“There is no diktat from the club, we just want to work with the players and appeal to their conscience during this difficult moment for all of European and global football.
According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, as per Football Italia, Inter will save a whopping €25 million if the players agree to the request from the board.
Last week, the club legend and current director Javier Zanetti acknowledged the club have “serious financial problems” and “it could take a couple of years to rediscover that balance”.
