The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby has condemned the recurrent attacks on peaceful protesters across the country, noting that he has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to safeguard the lives of every Nigerian amid growing unrest.
President Buhari and Archbishop Welby are said to have a cordial relationship; rolling back the years to when he was Nigeria’s petroleum minister.
The latter, at the time held the position of a financial executive director in the petroleum industry, for the French corporation Eif Aquitaine, overseeing the West African region.
Welby, in the wake of the sporadic shootings of EndSARS protesters at Lekki tollgate took to his twitter handle to express his displeasure.
He tweeted, “I condemn in the strongest terms the reported deliberate shooting of unarmed protesters in #Lagos and other parts of #Nigeria.
“I have urged President @MBuhari directly to ensure that lives are protected – and I say again now.
I mourn for Nigeria. May God save Nigeria” he concluded.
