Manchester United has revealed that the club has plans to build the biggest stadium in the United Kingdom.
According to the club, the proposed stadium is an iconic new £2 billion, 100,000-seater ground close to Old Trafford.
This was disclosed by Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
He said he wanted to build the “world’s greatest football stadium,” which the club hopes will be completed within five years.
“Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest stadium.
“Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind other arenas in world sport.
“I believe we may end up with the most iconic football stadium in the world,” he said.
Old Trafford has been Manchester United’s home since 1910.
The club management said that once construction is complete, the club’s existing home will be demolished.
United’s announcement comes after an extensive consultation process on whether to develop the existing stadium or build a new one.
The club will continue to play at Old Trafford until the new stadium is ready.
