A Catholic priest, Isaac Achi, was brutally murdered in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Paikoro Local Government area of Niger State.
Local reports indicate that suspected terrorists attempted to gain access to the well-fortified residence where the priest was living, but upon failing to do so, set the building on fire, ultimately burning the priest alive.
Another priest, Father Collins, was also injured in the attack, having been shot while attempting to escape.
Niger State Police command in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the attack, noting that tactical teams attached to Kafin-Koro Div were immediately drafted to the scene, but the hoodlums had escaped before the arrival of the teams.
“The lifeless body of Father Isaac was recovered while Father Collins was rushed to the hospital for treatment,” said Wasiu.
“The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command CP Ogundele Ayodeji had dispatched a reinforcement team to the area and effort is ongoing to apprehend the assailants as an investigation into the unfortunate attack has commenced.”
Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State has issued a statement condemning the senseless killing of the priest and calling for justice to be served.
CAN Chairman Bulu Yohanna stated, “Enough of the attacks and wanton killings of innocent Nigerian citizens. One of the primary responsibilities of government is to protect the lives and property of the people you govern.”
As the investigation continues, the Catholic community mourns the loss of their beloved priest and calls for an end to the violence plaguing the country.
