Africa’s wealthiest businessman, Aliko Dangote, has committed N15 billion (approximately $18 million) to revolutionise Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH) in Wudil, Kano State.
The historic pledge, announced during the university’s 5th combined convocation on Saturday, marks one of Nigeria’s largest private investments in higher education infrastructure.
Blueprint for Excellence
The five-year development plan will fund the construction of modern student hostels, state-of-the-art engineering laboratories, and a 24-hour digital hub with global internet access. Others are a new Senate building and career placement programmes for top graduates.
Dangote, the university’s chancellor, framed the investment as critical for Nigeria’s future, noting that “When we equip our youth with world-class facilities, we’re not just building a university – we’re building a nation.” The industrialist also praised Governor Abba Yusuf’s education initiatives, urging other wealthy Nigerians to support human capital development.
Academic Milestones
The ceremony celebrated 18,000 graduates across seven combined convocations, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Musa-Tukur Yakasai revealing all 45 academic programmes now hold full National Universities Commission accreditation. The university honoured five distinguished Nigerians with honorary doctorates, including Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the institution’s founder.
Governor Yusuf unveiled two premium incentives for top performers. They include automatic employment and fully funded international scholarships. “These scholars represent Kano’s intellectual ambassadors to the world,” he declared.
Philanthropic Momentum
The event sparked additional commitments, including a 500-bed female hostel pledge from billionaire Dahiru Mangal. Senator Kwankwaso hailed the collective effort as “a template for transforming public education through strategic partnerships.”
Education analysts note the project could become a model for private-public collaboration in African higher education, particularly in STEM fields crucial for Nigeria’s industrial ambitions. With Dangote’s investment equivalent to 150% of the university’s previous annual budget, ADUSTECH appears poised for rapid transformation into a regional academic powerhouse.
