Nigeria and Germany will on Wednesday hold high-level bilateral consultations in Abuja as both countries seek to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, renewable energy, climate action, security, education and technology.
The meeting will see Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, host her German counterpart, Johann David Wadephul, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
The consultations are part of ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations, expand investment opportunities and promote sustainable development.
Germany remains one of Nigeria’s largest trading partners in Europe and has maintained decades-long cooperation with the country in areas including energy, agriculture, healthcare, migration, security and technical assistance.
Announcing the visit, the ministry stated that the bilateral consultations are aimed at further strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two nations.
It noted that the Nigeria-Germany partnership is built on mutual respect, shared democratic values, economic cooperation and a common commitment to promoting regional and global peace, security, stability and sustainable development.
According to the ministry, the talks will provide an opportunity for both foreign ministers to review the progress made in implementing existing bilateral agreements and identify new areas for collaboration.
Discussions are expected to focus on expanding trade and commercial partnerships, attracting more German investment into Nigeria’s priority sectors, enhancing cooperation in renewable energy and green industrialisation, promoting vocational education and skills development, and strengthening partnerships in science, technology and innovation.
The ministry reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening ties with Germany, describing the European nation as one of Nigeria’s foremost strategic partners.
It noted that Nigeria values its relationship with Germany and remains committed to advancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest for the benefit of both countries.
The ministry added that the discussions are expected to open new opportunities for collaboration, support inclusive economic growth, promote regional stability and enhance shared prosperity.
It also expressed confidence that the visit by the German Foreign Minister would further consolidate the longstanding friendship between both nations and reinforce their shared commitment to addressing global challenges through dialogue, partnership and constructive engagement.
