The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria has announced the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Mexico, describing the milestone as a testament to enduring bilateral cooperation.
The disclosure was contained in a statement signed by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the ministry, noting that relations between both countries, established on April 14, 1976, have evolved into a stable and mutually beneficial partnership.
According to the statement, the Nigeria-Mexico relationship has been anchored on respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and a shared commitment to international peace and development. It added that both countries have maintained cordial engagement at bilateral and multilateral levels, particularly within the United Nations system, where they have often aligned on key global issues.
The ministry further highlighted that cooperation between the two nations has expanded across sectors such as trade and investment, energy, agriculture, education, culture, and technical exchange. In recent years, both sides have placed renewed emphasis on economic diplomacy, driven by increased private sector participation, diversification of trade, and exploration of emerging opportunities, including renewable energy and industrial development.
“The Government of Nigeria notes with satisfaction the steady growth in engagement between both countries and acknowledged the vital role of diplomatic dialogue, institutional cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges in consolidating this partnership,” the statement said.
It added that such interactions continue to reflect the shared aspirations of both nations for inclusive growth, sustainable development, and enhanced South-South cooperation.
“As Nigeria and Mexico mark this golden jubilee, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to further deepening bilateral relations through high-level engagements, strengthened institutional frameworks, and strategic cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” the statement added.
The ministry congratulated the governments and peoples of both countries on the historic milestone, expressing confidence that the next phase of relations would yield even greater dividends.
