Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu has approved a sweeping new directive that lays out stringent rules for Nigeria’s military personnel, prohibiting a range of behaviors deemed incompatible with the armed forces’ core values. This includes a ban on homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, cross-dressing, and membership in LGBTQIA2S+ groups.
The directive, which is part of the revised Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, was signed into law on December 16, 2024. It outlines clear boundaries for military conduct, including the prohibition of body piercing, tattoos, and drunkenness while on or off duty.
The new rules also discourage disorderly behavior, public brawls, and any actions that would bring disgrace to the military.
Further, the directive mandates that officers avoid romantic relationships with subordinates, and bans them from engaging in any activity with political parties or secret societies. They are also prohibited from operating private businesses or misusing government resources for personal gain.
Among other restrictions, military personnel must adhere to financial obligations, such as timely payment of vehicle licenses and insurance. Additionally, they are forbidden from accepting gifts or favors from junior officers or subordinates.
While, the updated terms of service emphasize the importance of discipline and professionalism in the military, the document does not specify the exact penalties for those who fail to comply.
