As the political tension between the erstwhile Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and his anointed successor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara escalates, the state government has commenced the pulling down of the House of Assembly structure situated at Moscow Road, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.
This comes days after 27 members of the Assembly elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
All 27 members are loyalists of the immediate past governor Wike who is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in an APC-led government.
There were moves to impeach Fubara earlier, which resulted into an attempt to burn down the Assembly by unknown assailants.
A government source on Wednesday said the demolition of the structure was being carried out on the order of Governor Fubara.
Over 10 bulldozers, excavators, and other heavy-duty machines had arrived the Assembly complex as early as 5 a.m. on Wednesday to carry out the exercise.
The demolition commenced at about 7:30 a.m.
