Uruguay early Monday morning edged favourites Italy 1-0 to lift its first ever FIFA U20 World Cup inside the Diego Maradona stadium in Argentina.
The victory by the South Americans ended European dominance of the competition.
Brazil was the last winner from South America in 2011.
It was Uruguay’s Luciano Rodriguez only goal towards stoppage time of the regulation time that made the difference.
As reported by international new agency, Associated Press, more than 40,000 people attended and cheered the Uruguay team.
South American Swan Song/Dimishing European Dominance
Uruguay lost the final of the tournament in 1997 and 2013.
The South American side triumphed few months after neighbours Argentina won the senior men World Cup title in December 2022.
The title won by the Argentines also stopped sequence of wins of European teams.
In the third place match, debutant Israel shocked South Korea 3-1 to secure third place in the same stadium in La Plata.
Nigeria was the only African country that reached the quarter-final of this year’s edition of the tournament.
