Zambia’s Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, escaped unhurt after a military helicopter carrying her and seven members of her entourage crashed shortly after take-off late Thursday.
Nalumango said the incident occurred as the delegation departed from an election campaign rally in Nakonde, a town in northeastern Zambia.
Although the cause of the crash has not yet been established, all eight occupants survived the incident without serious injuries.
In a statement on Friday, the Zambian government said the vice president was taken for a precautionary medical examination following the crash and was subsequently discharged after doctors confirmed she was in good health.
The accident comes as political campaigns intensify ahead of Zambia’s general elections scheduled for August 13.
Meanwhile, President Hakainde Hichilema, who is seeking a second term in office, is widely considered the frontrunner in the upcoming polls.
