Former President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has urged leaders across the world to embrace purpose-driven leadership that prioritizes people over power, as he delivered a keynote address at Harvard University’s Ministerial Leadership Programme.
“The most important thing about leadership is not what you know. It is who you are—and what drives you,” Adesina said.
Speaking to an audience of global policymakers and emerging leaders, Adesina stressed that true leadership must be rooted in compassion, accountability, and service, rather than the mere occupation of positions of authority. He challenged leaders to move beyond titles and focus on transforming lives through deliberate and people-centred actions.
He further emphasised that leadership requires authenticity and inner conviction, warning that individuals cannot give what they do not possess or pretend to be what they are not. According to him, the defining question for any leader remains whether they choose to lead for personal gain or for the greater good of the people they serve.
Adesina’s remarks come amid growing global conversations around ethical leadership and governance, with increasing calls for leaders to demonstrate integrity, responsibility, and a genuine commitment to public welfare.
