Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party has retained its dominance in the country’s political landscape after securing another parliamentary majority in the latest national elections.
Results announced on Sunday by Ethiopia’s National Election Board confirmed that the ruling party won enough seats to maintain control of Parliament, extending its hold on power amid a divided opposition.
The outcome was largely anticipated, with political observers predicting a comfortable victory for the Prosperity Party due to its nationwide reach and the fragmented nature of rival political groups.
Abiy Ahmed, who came to power in 2018 following widespread anti-government protests that ended the long rule of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), formed the Prosperity Party in 2019 as part of a broader political reform agenda aimed at reshaping the country’s governance structure.
Since its creation, the party has remained the dominant force in Ethiopian politics. Its latest electoral success further consolidates Abiy’s leadership and strengthens the ruling party’s position in the country’s legislature.
The victory follows the Prosperity Party’s overwhelming performance in the 2021 parliamentary elections, when it captured more than 90 per cent of the contested seats, securing a commanding majority in Parliament.
The new mandate is expected to provide the government with continued legislative backing as it pursues its political, economic and development programmes, and its efforts to deepen political stability in Africa’s second-most populous nation.
