President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday stated that Nigeria and her security forces remain resolute and committed in addressing the root causes of insecurity in the nation.
Buhari gave this assurance in a virtual meeting with the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, alongside Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama.
The president who added that the issue of insecurity was a major concern to Nigeria, further employed the United States government to support the Nigerian government in its fight against insurgency.
“The insecurity and insurgency in Nigeria remain a great concern to us and it has impacted more negatively by influencing complex negative influence in the Sahara, Central Africa, and West Africa as well as the Lake Chad region.
“Nigeria and her security forces remain resolute and committed in addressing their root causes. The support of important and strategic partners of the United States cannot be overstated and the consequences of insecurity will affect all nations,” he added.
While congratulating Blinken on his recent appointment as Secretary, Buhari also appreciated President Joe Biden for his elimination of “the immigration restriction known as the Muslim Ban on travel and Visa’s for citizens in predominantly Muslim and African countries including Nigeria”.
Speaking on climate change, Buhari gave assurances that Nigeria would adhere to the climate change agreement which seeks to limit global warming and reducing greenhouse emissions.
On his part, Blinken thanked president Buhari for his participation in the just concluded leadership forum, stating that the US is looking forward in explore more ways to work together with Nigeria, especially in reducing gas remissions and adapting to the inevitable changes to come.
The visit of the US Secretary is the first since the Biden administration took over power, as both countries look to renew and strengthen ties.
