A statement issued by Director of Army Public Relations, Onyema Nwachukwu, revealed that the troops were deployed to check the activities of gunmen in the community before gunmen attacked thier location at Iggah/Asaba checkpoint.

The statement which noted that the troops are currently on the trail of the criminals, assured the general public of Nigerian Army commitment’s to providing adequate security in the general area in collaboration with other security agencies.

”We also urge members of the public to complement the effort of the security agencies by remaining law abiding and provide useful information on the fleeing gunmen,” it added.

What you should know

The ESN was formed by the leader of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, to provide internal security against herders invasion of farmlands for the Igbo speaking south-eastern region of Nigeria.

However, the group has been fingered in attacks on security operatives and infrastructure in the region, a development which has made the Nigerian Army embark on identifying and routing members of the ESN from their hideout.

With the recent arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, it is expected that there will be an end to the activities of the ESN which is believed to be escalating tension in the region.
