The traditional institution in Imo State was on Tuesday thrown into mourning after unknown gunmen shot down five monarchs.

The monarchs were killed at Nnenasa Community Headquarters of Njaba Local Government Area of the state.

Sources say the traditional rulers numbering over 20 were in a meeting when gunmen invaded the place, interrupted the meeting with sporadic gunshots and killed at least five of them on the spot.

Others who sustained heavy gunshots injuries were said to have been rushed to nearby hospital for treatment.

Two of the affected monarchs are Eze E. A Durueburuo, Obi I of Okwudor, and Eze Sampson Osunwa of Ihebinowere autonomous community.

Police Spokesperson in the state, Mike Abattam, who confirmed the incident, said that two monarchs were confirmed dead on the spot while the wounded have been taken to hospital for treatment.
