The government of Kogi state has introduced a levy on every loaf of bread baked in the state.
The move according to Kogi State ministry of commerce and industry is aimed at improving the state’s internally generated revenue.
Reacting to the development, the state’s chapter of the Association of Master bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) told newsmen that the levy was not acceptable to bakers.
An executive of the association Mr Godfirst who confirmed receipt of a memo communicating the levy told newsmen that the association has begun moves to meet with the consultant appointed by the state to collect the fee.
“We are trying to meet with the consultant but we have not been able to meet with him. We want to meet with him to give us more explanation.”
Mr. Godfirst further noted that bakers in the state were experiencing hardship occasioned by the incidence of Covid-19 pandemic and will not be able to meet the new demand.
“We are not happy about it, presently there is no market. We are facing different types of challenges, and if they are now asking us to pay another tax, we don’t know how we can cope,” he said.
