A night after what appeared like a pornographic moaning noise was heard in the background of a live television presentation, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has opened investigation.
The noise was heard while Gary Lineker presented the third-round replay between Wolves and Liverpool on Tuesday.
Lineker and pundits – Paul Ince and Danny Murphy were in the studio building up to the replay at Molineux, with around 10 minutes to go until kick-off.
But just as Lineker prepared to speak to fellow pundit Alan Shearer on the gantry, he was interrupted by what sounded like pornographic groans.
Lineker and Shearer carried on regardless, although the noise continued, much to the embarrassment of the Match of the Day presenter.
The culprit of the prank has since been revealed as a YouTuber.
“Here we are,” introduced the prankster on-camera to his millions of viewers.
“We have set up a phone with a loud sex noise in the BBC studio at the Wolves vs Liverpool FA Cup replay.”
The BBC kept their apology short and sweet as they released a statement that read: “We apologise to any viewers offended during the live coverage of the football this evening. We are investigating how this happened.”
Speaking on BBC Two’s Newsnight later on Tuesday, Lineker explained that he initially thought a video had been sent to one of the pundits’ phones. But it was “too loud”, he said, at which point he realised the incident was some kind of prank.
The incident did not go unnoticed by viewers, with clips of the moment widely shared on social media on Tuesday evening.
