Former Champions Leicester City have crashed out of the FA Cup , after they yielded to a 1-2 defeat by Blackburn in the fifth round at King Power arena.
The victory pushed Blackburn that beat another Premier League side in the Carabao Cup this year, to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2015.
Blackburn have not played in the top flight since being relegated at the end of the 2011-12 campaign but, as well as a cup run, they are eyeing promotion back to the big time this season.
The Lancashire side are fourth in the Championship although, an automatic return by finishing in the top two is unlikely, a play-off place is within reach.
Tuesday night’s win at Leicester, which was full of energy and verve, extended Blackburn’s excellent run to one defeat in 13 games and they are unbeaten in the last 10.
The defeat for Leicester came two days after coach Brendan Rodgers celebrated four years in charge at the King Power Stadium and marked his 200th game.
Two wins in their last nine English Premier League, (EPL) games halted their momentum away from the relegation zone.
For Manchester City, 2021/22 EPL winners, they progressed to the last eight of the FA Cup at the expense of a non-premier league Bristol City side, who lost 0-3 at Ashton Gate
Phil Foden scored twice and Kevin De Bruyne added late gloss as the six-time FA Cup winners ended Bristol City’s unbeaten 12-game run before a capacity crowd in the West Country.
England midfielder Kalvin Phillips, made only his second start, since leaving Leeds last summer as Ederson, Erling Haaland, Ilkay Gundogan, Jack Grealish and Rodri began the night on the bench.
