Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has embarked on a 21-day medical leave overseas and has handed over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Akeredolu, in a letter addressed to the House of Assembly, stated that Aiyedatiwa would serve as the acting governor until his return.
The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, confirmed receipt of the letter and disclosed that Akeredolu is expected to resume work on July 6, 2023.
According to Oladiji, “The leave, which commenced on June 7, will extend until July 6, 2023, accounting for the public holidays observed on June 12 (Democracy Day) and Eid el Kabir on June 28 and 29, 2023.”
Governor Akeredolu, who has appointed his deputy to act in his absence, has reassured the public of his full resumption on July 6, 2023.
Describing Governor Akeredolu as a proponent of peace and the rule of law, Oladiji conveyed his good wishes for a speedy recovery and an enjoyable vacation.
The extended absence of Governor Akeredolu from public events has sparked varied reactions among residents.
Critics, particularly, have speculated about the undisclosed nature of the governor’s ailment, while his aides maintain that he is in good health.
Although initially reluctant to admit his indisposition, it was later acknowledged that the situation was being managed appropriately.
The governor’s health condition and prolonged absence from duty have also triggered political manoeuvring and divisions within the cabinet.
Opposition political parties in the state have previously demanded transparency regarding Akeredolu’s whereabouts, urging him to delegate power to his deputy in accordance with constitutional provisions, given his health challenges.
