Day after relieving Jorge Vilda of his duty, the Spainish Football Federation (RFEF) has appointed Montse Tome, a female coach to take over the reigns of the country’s senior women’s team.
The new appointment means Tome will be the first woman to manage the Spanish side.
Tome’s Official Confirmation
This was disclosed in a statement by RFEF in a statement on Wednesday.
Part of the statement said, “Tome had been Vilda’s assistant coach since 2018 and has since established herself as a key player in the national team’s growth.”
Vilda’s contract was terminated earlier on Tuesday by the federation’s new board, which was formed after the suspension of RFEF President Luis Rubiales by FIFA over his alleged non-consensual kiss of a Spanish player Jenni Hermoso after the team won the Women’s World Cup two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Hermoso has now pressed charges against Rubiales, leading to his suspension from the federation’s presidency
In it, the player made a serious accusation against former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales, alleging sexual assault.
The incident unfolded after Spain’s triumphant Women’s World Cup final against England in Sydney, Australia, on August 20, 2023.
And Hermoso has continued to garner widespread support from Spainish government, players’ unions, fellow athletes, and the public.
In contrast, Rubiales remains in a contentious position, refusing to step down despite his ostracization from the soccer community.
