A former Rwandan gynaecologist has been arraigned in France in connection with the 1994 genocide, and he is standing trial for crimes against humanity.
A complaint was filed against Sosthene Munyemana in the city of Bordeaux, a year after the genocide that killed millions of people.
Munyemana, who has lived in France since 1994, is accused of organising torture and killings.
He was a 29-year-old gynaecologist living in the south of Rwanda at the time of the genocide and 28 years later, prosecutors say he has a case to answer.
While his trial lasts in Paris, the capital of France, the key to an office in a place called Tumba will strongly feature.
Munyemana, who has admitted to have had the key, said people from the Tutsi population sought refuge in the office.
Prosecutors accuse him of locking them inside the office in inhumane conditions before they were taken away and slaughtered.
His lawyer however argues that he worked to prevent the genocide.
Both parties have however agreed that it is unacceptable that it has taken so many years for this case to come to court.
Munyemana, who denies the charges, faces life in prison if convicted.
