Report from England indicates that West Ham and Brazilmidfielder Lucas Paqueta may face a lifetime ban for influencing four Premier League matches with the aim of betting.
The case revolves around deliberate yellow cards in four matches (against Leicester in 2022, and Aston Villa, Leeds United, and Bournemouth in 2023), where Paquetá allegedly aimed to benefit friends by internationally receiving bookings.
According to The Sun, the FA report indicates that up to 60 people placed bets on these yellow cards, resulting in estimated profits exceeding £100,000. If declared guilty, Paquetá’s punishment could surpass previous sanctions, including Sandro Tonali’s ten-month suspension.
Unfortunately, this situation has already impacted his career, as his anticipated move to Manchester City fell through. Despite this, he remains eligible to participate in the Copa América with Brazil.
Initially accused on May 23, the 26-year-old midfielder was expected to receive a ten-year ban if proven he was involved in a betting scheme with 60 associated persons.To trigger their bets, Paqueta earned four yellow cards. The investigation revealed that one of the bets, jeopardizing the player’s career, was merely 800 rubles.
The Brazilian has been part of West Ham since August 29, 2022, with his contract expiring on June 30, 2027.
In the last season, the midfielder scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 43 matches across various tournaments. Transfermarkt estimates the player at €65 million.
The 26-year-old was heavily linked with a big money move to Manchester City last summer, but ‘confidential’ issues were blamed for the transfer falling through and Pep Guardiola’s side ultimately signed Matheus Nunes from Wolves instead.
Should Paqueta stay at West Ham this summer, he will be working with a new manager after Julen Lopetegui was named as David Moyes’ replacement.
