In a historic move, South Africa has appointed Angie Motshekga, the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, as the Acting President of the Republic.
The announcement was made on Saturday, 17 August 2024, by the Presidency.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Ms. Angie Motshekga to serve as Acting President today, Saturday, 17 August 2024,” read a brief statement from the Presidency.
This appointment marks a significant moment in South African history, as Motshekga steps into the role during President Ramaphosa’s absence. He is currently on a Working Visit to Harare, Zimbabwe, where he is attending the 44th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The summit, which kicked off on Saturday morning, is being held under the theme: “Promoting Innovation to Unlock Opportunities for Sustained Economic Growth and Development towards an Industrialised SADC.” President Ramaphosa’s participation underscores South Africa’s commitment to regional cooperation and economic development within the SADC bloc.
Angie Motshekga, known for her extensive political career and leadership in various ministerial roles, temporarily assumes the highest office in the land.
