Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has called for urgent action to halt hostilities in Gaza, emphasising the need for a cease-fire, a prisoner exchange, and unimpeded humanitarian access to the territory.
During a phone discussion with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides on Tuesday, Sisi reiterated Egypt’s commitment to brokering a truce and facilitating the release of hostages on both sides. “Swift action is essential to establish a cease-fire, facilitate the exchange of Palestinian and Israeli captives, and ensure unrestricted humanitarian aid for Gaza residents,” the Egyptian presidency stated.
The call comes amid intensified efforts by Egypt and Qatar to mediate an agreement between Hamas and Israel. Egyptian media reported ongoing negotiations, with Hamas describing talks in Doha as “positive and serious” while stressing the need for Israel to refrain from imposing new conditions to finalise the deal.
The Gaza conflict, which escalated after the Hamas-led attack on 7 October, has resulted in over 45,000 casualties, predominantly women and children, according to reports. The International Criminal Court recently issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over alleged war crimes in Gaza, and Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
The situation remains dire as international calls for a resolution intensify.
