The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced a 96% reduction in gas flaring at the Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) fields, operated in partnership with First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited.
According to a statement from NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, on Sunday, the milestone was achieved through an associated gas (AG) reinjection strategy.
Rather than flaring excess gas, the strategy stores it in an underground reservoir at the Madu field, located offshore in Bayelsa State.
“The NNPC Ltd and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited Joint Venture has successfully reduced routine gas flaring by 96% at the Anyala and Madu fields. This achievement was made possible by reinjecting associated gas into a designated underground storage reservoir at the Madu field, significantly reducing environmental impact,” the statement read.
The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment under the Paris Agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% unconditionally and 47% conditionally.
It also complies with the regulatory framework set by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, ensuring adherence to national environmental standards and global best practices.
