An individual who was involved in breaching security protocol during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Kaduna, North Western region, where he commissioned projects, was born with “psychiatric disorders”, Nigeria Police authorities say.

Umar Mohammed, a native of Anguwan Muazu in Kaduna, out of excitement, breached the protocol and jumped into the restricted arena out of curiosity to catch a closer look at the Nigerian leader, spokesperson of the police command in Kaduna State, DSP Mansir Hassan, said in a statement on Friday.

A viral video on social media has shown where the individual caused a scene at Murtala Mohammed Square by attempting to run close to the President, getting the President’s security on high alert in what some analysts said looks like an attempted attack.

The President, who was making his speech in the presence of the state governor, Uba Sani, had simply responded, “Leave him alone.”

The police said the fellow was immediately blocked and arrested by the security team. He was thoroughly searched, and no incriminating item was found in his possession, police authorities added.

On how he found his way in, authorities said the fellow was screened and admitted into the stadium as a supporter of the governing party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), wearing the standard campaign T-shirt and carrying banners bearing the images of the President and Governor Uba Sani, like every other supporter admitted into the stadium.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Rabiu Muhammad, has warned “mischief makers” and members of the public to refrain from spreading falsehoods or politicising the incident, assuring that the matter would be further investigated.

Kaduna is home to erstwhile political ally of President Tinubu, Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor who was rejected by the Senate in 2023 for ministerial appointment.

El-Rufai, now a fierce critic of the President, is also fighting for political survival in the state he governed for eight years, as his relationship with his anointed successor, Sani, has also gone sour.

He is advocating a coalition to unseat President Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
