Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa have earned prestigious spots in the 2024 Best Countries Rankings, a comprehensive evaluation conducted by U.S. News & World Report in partnership with the Wharton School and global marketing firm WPP.
The annual study assessed 87 nations based on global perceptions across multiple attributes, positioning these African countries alongside the world’s most admired destinations.
Egypt led Africa’s representation at 35th place globally, celebrated for its unparalleled cultural heritage and influence.
Morocco followed closely at 39th, recognized for its vibrant tourism sector and business-friendly environment, while South Africa rounded out the continental presence at 40th, praised for its entrepreneurial spirit and quality of life offerings.
The rankings derived from surveys of over 17,000 respondents worldwide – including business leaders, academics and citizens – who evaluated nations across 73 metrics grouped into ten key categories: cultural influence, quality of life, business climate, social purpose and historical legacy among others. Countries required minimum thresholds in GDP, foreign investment and tourism to qualify for inclusion.
While Switzerland claimed the global top spot for its exceptional quality of life and stable business environment, with Japan and the United States completing the podium, Africa’s inclusion signals growing international recognition of the continent’s appeal. Egypt’s ancient wonders and modern development, Morocco’s unique blend of adventure and economic opportunity, and South Africa’s dynamic innovation ecosystem all contributed to their strong showings.
The results highlight how perceptions of African nations are evolving beyond traditional stereotypes, though the continent still faces challenges in areas like infrastructure and social equality that prevent higher placements.
