The Libyan Government of National Unity has unveiled a new package of solar energy projects aimed at strengthening the country’s electricity grid and accelerating its transition towards renewable energy.
The initiative was announced following a meeting between the Minister of State for Prime Minister and Cabinet Affairs, Mohammed Bin Ghalboun, and officials of the Renewable Energy Authority, where progress on the implementation of Libya’s National Renewable Energy Strategy was reviewed.
During the meeting, officials stressed the need to accelerate priority renewable energy projects as the government seeks to improve electricity supply and reduce pressure on the national grid.
Under the new initiative, hybrid solar power systems will be installed at mosques, government buildings and public schools. The projects are expected to help reduce their reliance on the national electricity network while promoting the use of clean energy.
The meeting also confirmed the completion of executive procedures for the planned 500-megawatt Al-Saddadah Solar Power Plant.
The solar facility is regarded as a strategic project that could significantly increase Libya’s electricity generation capacity while diversifying the country’s energy sources.
The government’s renewed focus on solar power comes as Libya seeks to address persistent electricity challenges and make greater use of its abundant solar energy potential.
Officials said accelerating the implementation of renewable energy projects would remain a priority under the National Renewable Energy Strategy, with solar power expected to play a growing role in supporting the country’s energy security and reducing pressure on conventional power generation.
