The Nigerian Government has confirmed that efforts are underway to evacuate a group of Nigerian workers stranded in the Central African Republic, following reports that they were abandoned by their employers in the remote Bambari region.
According to a statement by the Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian Mission in Bangui has established contact with the affected individuals and is coordinating closely with local authorities to ensure their safety and swift return home.
“The Embassy of Nigeria in Bangui is actively engaging relevant authorities to ensure the protection and repatriation of the affected nationals.
“Their passports have been retrieved, and a vehicle has been dispatched to transport them from Bambari, about 850 kilometres from the capital to Bangui,” the statement read.
The Ministry further noted that the Nigerians are expected to arrive in the capital on Saturday, July 26, under military escort. Arrangements are also being made to provide temporary accommodation and welfare support pending their repatriation to Nigeria.
The group’s ordeal came to light after a video showing their desperate condition surfaced online and went viral, sparking public concern and calls for immediate government action.
In response, the Ministry reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of its citizens wherever they may be across the globe.
While assuring Nigerians that every effort is being made to bring the affected workers home safely, the Ministry also issued a warning to citizens seeking job opportunities abroad.
“We urge all Nigerians travelling for work to thoroughly verify the legitimacy of their employers and ensure proper documentation before departing. It is equally important for Nigerians overseas to register their presence with the nearest Nigerian embassy to enable prompt assistance in the event of consular challenges,” the statement added.
