All is now set for the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, with RaceBird pilots from nine teams in the World Championship ready for an electrifying showdown in the penultimate race of the season.
Marking its debut appearance in Africa this weekend, the E1 Series is the world’s first all-electric international offshore powerboat championship. The three-day event is expected to draw top dignitaries, including the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; the CEO and co-founder of the E1 Series, Rodi Basso; and key figures from various industries.
Among the participants is former African Footballer of the Year and ex-Chelsea star, Didier Drogba, who co-owns Team Drogba Global Africa alongside Gabrielle Lemaire.
Ahead of the main contest, which commenced with an opening ceremony on Friday, pilots conducted practice runs on Thursday before Saturday’s qualifying rounds and the final race on Sunday.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Sam Egube, said the E1 Lagos GP would serve as a platform to project Lagos’ culture, dynamism, and economic potential to the world.
Egube noted that beyond its sporting value, the championship aligns with the state government’s vision to engage in global discussions on sustainable energy and innovation in marine transportation.
“E1 Lagos GP elevates Nigeria’s profile as a modern, progressive, and forward-thinking nation. This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special: the cultural heritage and energy of Lagos people.
“It is also an opportunity to welcome tourists and investors and share Lagos success stories to bring in more investment and highlight the potential of the city of aquatic splendour. History is happening here. Lagos is racing for the future, for Africa, for the world,” he said.
E1 founder and Chief Executive Officer, Rodi Basso, described bringing the series to Africa as a defining moment in their mission to expand electric racing worldwide.
“Lagos brings incredible energy, creativity and ambition that matches E1’s DNA perfectly. We are honoured to work with local partners to create a sporting spectacle that helps drive clean innovation while elevating Lagos’ profile as a global hub for sport and sustainable development,” he said.
