Eromosele Adene is an #EndSARS champion who was arrested on the 7th of November by dozens of policemen over his alleged connection to a planned protest in Lagos.
Not long after his arrest, the 27-year-old Nigerian was transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department at the Police Headquarters, Abuja and subsequently returned to detention in Lagos on November 15th without being charged to court.
It is worthwhile to note that the activist’s arrest came just two days after the Lagos State Police Command announced that it would resist any attempts to stage protests ‘either “peaceful” or violent.’
Thus, Eromosele’s arrest is not unconnected to calls for the continuation of nationwide protests against police brutality that kicked off in early October and culminated in the deadly attack by soldiers on peaceful protesters in the Lekki area of Lagos on October 20.
Eromosele was secretly arraigned before the Yaba Magistrates Court in Lagos on Monday – without the consent of his lawyer – by the police who applied for a remand order to detain him for an extra 30 days.
The police told Magistrate, O.A Salau, that the defendant was being investigated for criminal incitement, cyberstalking, provoking breach of public peace, and conduct likely to cause the breach of peace.
Authorities also told the court that Eremosele was arrested at the scene of a demonstration even though eye witness accounts and video evidence proved he was arrested in his home.
The remand request also claimed the activist made a confessional statement after being arrested with exhibits
Although he magistrate, O. A. Salawu has adjourned the hearing of the request for bail till Tuesday, November 17 (today), there are growing concerns about Eromosele’s health as he reportedly has liver complication and immune system disorder.
Eromosele sister Onomene has long condemned his unlawful incarceration, stressing that continued detention will worsen his liver infection.
