Gabon’s new leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, who seized power from President Ali Bongo Ondimba, is set to be sworn in as the “transitional president” before the Constitutional Court on Monday, September 4, according to the announcement made by the coup leaders on Thursday.
Following the overthrow of President Ali Bongo Ondimba, General Oligui, in his capacity as the country’s new strongman, has also declared the “gradual establishment of transitional institutions” and assured that Gabon will honor all its “external and internal commitments”.
Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi Manfoumbi, spokesperson for the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), which includes all army commanders, made the announcement on state television, stating that the President of the Transition will take the oath of office as the Presidency of the Republic on Monday, September 4, 2023.
General Oligui has also made the decision to gradually establish the transitional institutions, although the duration of this transitional period has not been specified. Additionally, he has instructed all secretaries-general, ministerial cabinets, directors-general, and those in charge of State services to ensure the immediate resumption of work and the uninterrupted functioning of all public services.
In order to reassure all donors, development partners, and creditors of the State, the President of the Transition has expressed his commitment to upholding the country’s commitments both domestically and internationally, as stated by Colonel Manfoumbi Manfoumbi.
