John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been officially sworn in as Ghana’s sixth President under the Fourth Republic.
The swearing-in ceremony, held on Tuesday, 7 January 2025, took place at the Black Star Square in Accra, with the oath of allegiance and presidential oath administered by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
Before Mahama’s inauguration, Ghana’s first female Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, took her oath of office and the vice-presidential oath of allegiance.
Mahama, who previously served as President from 7 January 2013 to 6 January 2017, has made history as the first Ghanaian leader under the Fourth Republic to lose a presidential election and later make a successful comeback.
Born 66 years ago in Damongo, now part of the Savannah Region, to Mr E. A. Mahama and Madam Abiba Nnaba, Mahama has held numerous roles in Ghanaian governance. These include Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi Constituency, Deputy Minister for Communications, Minister for Communications, Vice President, and President of the Republic of Ghana.
